National Rally & Benefit Dinner for Imam Jamil

*** National Rally for Imam Jamil --- September 14, 2001 - September 15, 2001 ***

The National Support Committee for Imam Jamil, which consists of the major national Muslim organizations in America, the Justice Fund and the Majlis ash-Shura of Atlanta call upon Muslims to attend the National Rally for Imam Jamil in Atlanta, Georgia. The rally will start with Jum`ah Prayer in a downtown park on September 14, 2001 and conclude with a mass rally on Saturday, September 15, 2001. The goal is have 10,000 people attend the Rally. Speakers will include prominent Muslim leaders, civil rights leaders and national celebrities. The Rally will take place immediately before jury selection for Imam Jamil's trial, and the purpose of the Rally is to show Atlanta and possible jurors that large numbers of Muslims and other people of good faith are behind Imam Jamil.

The National Mobilization Committee is led by Mahdi Bray (Washington, DC).

The Local Organizing Committee is led by Bilal Mahmud.

Imam Jamil has served as President of the Islamic Shura Council of North America, Vice President and acting President of the American Muslim Council (AMC), and a member of the Central Shura of the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) apart from being a leader of what he simply called "The Community." He was also one of the leading civil rights activists during the civil rights movement including serving as the president of SNCC (Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee).

Imam Jamil is currently behind bars, having been indicted by the state of Georgia on one count of murder, four counts of felony murder, two counts of aggravated assault and six other lesser charges. Although the evidence overwhelmingly points to his innocence in the case, the state has announced it will pursue a death penalty conviction of Imam Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin. Imam Jamil's Legal Defense Fund is desperately in need of your donations. Imam Jamil will be facing a great deal of adversity when his trial begins, and it is our duty to support him in every way we possibly can. It is on this note that the Imam Jamil Benefit Dinner has been organized.
